Rules of the 1st Stone Carving Championship 2021 of Finland

The 1st Stone Carving Championship 2021 of Finland in Juuka, North Careiia Fri – Sun 2. – 4.7.2021
Theme Wild Nature – Karelian Impressions Visualized In Stone.

The organizers are Ellin Taitajat ry, Association for Rural Culture and Education and Juuka municipality.

The championship is associated with the 300th anniversary of the North Karelia and the North Carelian Sculptor events.


The Stone Carving Championship 2021 will be held in Finland for the first time on July 2-4, 2021. The carving material is the unique soapstone of Juuka.

The competition is an art competition and the theme is Wild Nature- Karelian Impressions Visualised In Stone: with its beautiful landscapes, forests, wilderness, lakes, animals and experiences. The topic is inspired by highlighting the responsible use of nature and the challenges of preserving its diversity and natural beauty.

In the arrangements for the stone sculpture competition and event, we are preparing for any changes that may be required by the corona restrictions.

The competition is open to all Finnish citizens or persons over the age of 16 living in Finland; the registration of a competitor under the age of 18 must be accompanied by the consent of the guardian.
Foreigners living abroad may participate to competition, if they have summer residence in Juuka

Competition series
There will be two competitions of the individuals
1. Finland Championship of Hand Stone Carving 2. – 4.7.2021
2. Finland Championship of Machine Stone Carving 2.-4.2021

Sculpture site

Each competitor will be provided with work table and a ready-made soapstone block:

  • Hand Stone Carving: block measurements 20 x 30 x 40 cm.  
  • Machine Stone Carving: block measurements 30 x 30 x 60 cm.

The use of other materials is prohibited.
Sculpture sites / places will be drawn in advance at the sculptor meeting on July 1 2021.

The registration fee of € 50 is paid in advance to Elli Taitajat’s bank account. Account number FI91 5086 0920 0725 49. The reference message must mention Kivenveisto SM 2021 and the name of the competitor. A receipt must be presented at the competition venue. The registration fee includes a stone carving block, a floor accommodation, meals and a t-shirt

If there are remaining places, you can still register for the competition at the Meeting Place in Ellinkulma, Väyryläntie 1, Juuka before the start of the competition from 8.30 to 10.30.

Selection of competitors
The organizer of the competition, Ellin Taitajat ry, approves on the basis of registrations and the invitation procedure
– a maximum of 10 sculptors for the hand carving competition, and
– a maximum of 10 sculptors for the machine carving competition.

There must be at least four participants in the Finnish championship level competition.

A letter will be sent to those who have registered by June 8, 2021, giving more detailed instructions on, among other things, sculpture sites, accommodation reservations and dining arrangements. Participants are responsible for their own accommodation costs if they do not stay in a place reserved by the organizers of the competition.

The work to be carved is carved from a soapstone block
measuring 20 x 30 x 40 cm in hand sculpture and
size 30 x 30 x 60 cm in machine sculpture.

The substances and working methods used must not cause harm or danger to the environment. Excess material must be removed or properly disposed of by the sculptor. The organizer is responsible for clearing stones and stone dust.

Sculpture sites / places (hand and machine sculpture places) are drawn in advance July 1 Thursday at the Sculptors’ Meeting.

The stone sculpture competition venue is a park in or near the center of Juuka.

Tools, equipment and occupational safety
The sculptor brings the tools they need to the competition, as well as any extension cords they need. The organizer reserves the possibility to get air-compressor, electricity and water.
You can also use either air-compressor or electric machines in the hand sculpture competition to work on the rough shape of the sculpture. For the rest, the sculpturing is done with hand tools. The Competition Manager and the Facility Manager will control the allowed time for the machine-use.

The sculptor must wear at least safety shoes, hearing protection, eye protection, masks and, if necessary, respirators as safety equipment. The sculptor brings his own safety equipment to the competition venue.

If the sculptor does not use these safety equipment as defined in the rules, their competition will be suspended until the safety equipment standards are met.

The sculptor takes care of his own insurance.

The sculptor undertakes to follow a way of working that takes into account their own safety and the safety of other competitors and the public.

The sculptor will sign a discharge agreement before the competition.

Competitors are not allowed to use auxiliaries in their work.

Alcohol is not allowed in the competition area. Smoking is only allowed in a specially marked place.

Work schedule

Hand and Machine Stone Carving competition
Competitors will arrive on Thursday, 1st July by 6 pm to Meeting place Ellinkulma, Väyryläntie 1, 83900 Juuka. There will be registration, an evening meal, a raffle of sculpture sites, plans for carving and a meeting of stone sculptors.

The competition time is 2-4 July Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The jury of the competition (3-5 people) consists of representatives of art, sculpture, nature and local culture selected by the organizer.

Based on the evaluation criteria, the jury will select three works to be awarded. The decision of the jury is binding.

Evaluation criteria
The evaluation criterias are:

     • Artistic overall impression, sculptural both figurative and abstract

        an artistic emotional experience that often arises from a first impression

       structures and composition.

     • Technical know-how: use of stone, taking into account the amount of material

       has been used. Quality, support for finishing and other solutions (surface treatments)

       artistic impression.

     • Topic handling: originality and message, new idea or modified familiar

       subject in a new style, position and relevance to the theme.

Prizes and prize distribution

I prize € 300, II prize € 200, III prize € 100 and the next € 50 each.

There will be also the public vote. The result of the public vote will be announced at the end of the competition.

The award ceremony will take place on Sunday, July 4, 2021 at 2 p.m. in Central Park.

Ownership of competition sculptures
The works carved in the competitions will remain the property of Ellin Taitajat ry. The owner also reserves the right to auction the sculptures. The future owner is responsible for the display, maintenance and preservation of the sculptures.

The organizers have the right to use the photos and recordings taken in connection with the competition in their related communications.
